World Kidney Day is a global campaign that aims to raise awareness of kidney disease and the importance of kidney health. It also provides an opportunity to recognise the work that many of our teams do every today to train and educate healthcare professionals and patients.
Meet Helen Green from our Baxter Education Centre in Manchester.
Q: Can you tell us a little about your role at Baxter?
Helen: I joined Baxter just over ten years ago working as a Renal Therapies Specialist. In 2018 I was appointed Manager of the Baxter Education Centre (BEC) in Swinton, Manchester.
Prior to joining Baxter, I was a renal nurse working within the NHS for over 20 years.
Q: Being diagnosed with kidney disease can be a huge challenge, both for the patient and those people around them. How does BEC support patients as they start their dialysis journey?
Helen: We have a very knowledgeable and experienced team that provides dialysis training in a group setting to patients, carers and healthcare professionals. As well as learning how to independently carry out their dialysis at home, our facility provides a space where patients and carers can meet each other and talk about their experiences. Sharing stories over a cup of tea can really help a patient feel less isolated. Many patients form friendships that continue long after their training.
Q: What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Helen: When patients initially arrive for dialysis training, reality hits and they are often quite nervous. It’s very satisfying to see patients gaining confidence with their learning and leaving fully prepared to perform the therapy at home. Seeing patients complete their training and walking out with a smile is very rewarding. We often get lovely feedback.
Q: Providing patient education is key part of dialysis treatment, can you share with us what your dialysis patients have taught you?
Helen: I have realised that no two people are the same and everyone handles their situation differently. I learn something new every day, and that makes my position so enjoyable.
